On Saturday November 18, 2006, East Texas drummers met at American Band Instrument's Education Center in Tyler, Texas for the Fifth Annual Duel of the Drummers competition. The competitors ranged from 5 years old through 23 years old.

The competitors were grouped into three age divisions. These divisions were 13 and under, 14 through 15, and 16 and over. Each participant was given not more than 15 minutes to set up (rearrange) the drum set and perform a solo of his choosing. The drum set used for the competition was a profession six piece set. Competitors were allowed to use their own foot pedal, cymbals, and snare drum, if they wished.

Each of the drummers brought with them their own group of admirers who clapped and cheered them. It was a Saturday fill with great fun for everyone that attended. An estimated 165 people attended the event.

In addition to the trophies and gift certificates awarded by American Band Instrument Service and American Drum Shop, many the drum companies donated prizes. The three main winners were allowed to choose from the three prizes shown at left.

Prize #1: Is a complete set of Pearl Export Drums including hardware.

Prize #2: A Synergy Conga Set with stand, a Synergy Bongo Set with stand, and a Triple Toca Cowbell set with stand.

Prize #3: A Mapex Maple and Cherry wood Panther Snare Drum, and Sabian Xs cymbal set.

In addition to the prizes awarded the contestants, there were dozens of give-a-ways won by drawing that went to family and friends of the contestants who had come to watch. Give-A-Way prizes were donated by Aquarian Drum Heads, Paiste Cymbals, ProMark drumsticks, Pearl drums, Regaltip drumsticks, Sabian cymbals, Yamaha drums, and Zildjian cymbals. Prizes included drum heads sets, sticks, dozens of “T” shirts, special drum videos, special drum posters, and special artist posters.

Everyone who attended got miniature Paiste cymbal pins, Drumstick key rings, and their choice of many percussion company catalogs.
